This is a visible method of advertisement that’s used to introduce Web users with a specific brand or product or the company that manufactures them. They are also used as a way to link the online users towards a specific website so they can learn more about a product or company. The viewer looks at the banner, can click on it and be taken to the company's website.

Banner advertising is also sometimes used for viewers to give their opinion on something important such as a presidential election or some other highly thought about world event. Most commonly, banner advertisements are shown on the top of the page so they're the first thing viewers see when they open a webpage. Banners are usually sold by click-thru, which means the viewer will click on the banner to get more information or by banner views or impressions. If the banner is a paid advertisement, it will be the only banner that appears on a specific page.

It should be used with other methods such as email campaigns, online searches, newspapers, etc. You want to have "all your bases covered" in case your banner advertising isn't seen by as many as you'd like. Another important aspect of this type of advertising is to make sure it gets excellent placement. It won't do a lot of good if it's on a site that doesn't get much traffic.
